Major plantain aka great plantain, broadleaf Plantain or plantago major is a perennial weed that grows in a variety of locations (forrest, meadows, under your feet) from Spring to Fall.
In nature, wild rabbits eat plantain and if you want your rabbit's diet to be as natural as possible, it is recommend to mimic the diet of their wild cousins.
All the rabbits at the sanctuary consume this herb with enthusiasm and most likely your pet will love it as well.
On top of that, it and contains a lot of fiber (approx. 23%) and you can feed it every day.
In folk medicine, plantain is used for respiratory and digestive issues.
This herb is a great one to memorize should you or a loved one get injured outdoors as it can aid skin irrations like insect bites, cuts and burns. The antimicrobial properties might help relieve the pain and help with healing.
For rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas it is a good idea to serve it dehydrated and to sprinkle in veggies and/or hay. Just make sure that your pet is drinking water.
