Matteo was discovered outdoors with ear mites and unkempt fur, appearing miserable and suffering from pain.
Just like humans, rabbits may neglect their usual grooming habits when they are sick. The condition of a rabbit's fur can rapidly indicate its health status. If a rabbit's fur appears dirty, tangled, oily, or unkempt, it may suggest that the rabbit has been neglected.
Ear mites can lead to discomfort and pain. It is recommended to work with a veterinaria to incorporate a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug in the treatment plan. Refrain from removing crusts as it may cause significant pain and lead to the formation of open ulcerated areas.
So we started the treatment plan, but also work on the nutrition. As a stray rabbit, Matteo most likely did not have access to fresh hay and water. So we offered him a buffet of different types of hay to see which one he liked best. And we gradually added our dehydrated herbs as they are easier to digest than fresh greens. We added the most common meadow herbs that are very rich in nutrients like the major plantain, ribwort plantain and dandelion leaves. To help with the ear discomfort, we added camomille as it will not only help with inflammation but with stress. Finally, we added in moderation sunflower petal as they are known to have a positive effect on coat and skin.
After a few weeks, we gradually introduced fresh greens like romaine lettuce, cilantro, celery leaves.
